'Illegitimate' report sparks writ

LOU Jing, a theatrical student, and her mother are suing a city newspaper, accusing it of fabricating a report about her being an "illegitimate child."

Lou, 21, recently wowed viewers in a television star-search show.

The Huangpu District People's Court has already accepted the lawsuit and will hear the case soon.

The plaintiffs want Shanghai Evening Post to make a public apology in its own newspaper and similar action from sina.com. They are also seeking 57,000 yuan (US$8,350) in compensation.

Lou, who has dark skin, attracted much attention when she appeared on the Dragon TV show "Angel."

Her mother is Shanghainese and her father African-American.

She said on the show that she wanted to find her father, who probably lives in the United States.

A report in the newspaper on August 27 plunged Lou, who had made the city's top five in the national contest, into controversy.

The report, written by Han Lei, said Lou's mother had an extramarital affair with an African-American.

The man returned to the US, leaving Lou's pregnant mother, the report said.

Lou and her mother denied having spoken to Han.

He published another report on September 5 about Lou "clarifying" the situation.

Lou said she was not interviewed for that report and their reputations were ruined.
