Illicit doctor jailed for fatal delivery

AN unlicensed doctor and birth attendant who was found guilty of causing the death of a woman during childbirth was sentenced to eight years in prison and fined 10,000 yuan (US$1,580) yesterday in Qingpu District People's Court.

Dou Linping, 36, went to help Li Hongzhen give birth at home in January 2009. Zhu Guozhong, Li's husband, said Dou pulled the infant out and cut off the umbilical cord. When she found there was only half of the placenta, the midwife stretched her hand into Li's vagina in search of the other half, causing mass bleeding of Li's uterus and laceration of her cervix.

Dou told the family there was no need to send Li to hospital. But after Dou left, Zhu found his wife becoming weaker and he sent her to a nearby hospital. Li died of hemorrhagic shock later in the day, the court was told.
