Infrared hunt for mysterious bird maulers
NINE infrared cameras are being set up to help identify and capture the culprits responsible for a spate of bird maulings over the past two weeks.
The 250-odd victims, ducks and chickens living in poultry breeding areas in the Pudong New Area, have been targeted by mysterious nocturnal creatures, three of which have been filmed by surveillance cameras.
“Ordinary cameras failed to record clear images of these animals, so infrared monitors will probably help,” Gu Jianming, director of Pudong New Area’s forestry station, told Shanghai Morning Post. “These animals are sly.”
More than 100 chickens and ducks in Xiangdai Village have been fatally attacked since February 23, local officials said.
Wildlife management authorities suspect it is the work of raccoon dogs. However, the Shanghai Wildlife Park, which is about 2 kilometres from the village, said no animals are believed to be missing from the facility.
