Injured deer rescued, dies after surgery
A LOST muntjac deer died of organ failure at the Shanghai Zoo after emergency surgery for a broken leg, zoo officials said yesterday.
The Reeves' muntjac, a type of small deer indigenous to Asia, was spotted by local residents in Baoshan District. It likely was caught by poachers outside the city and got away before it could be sold to a restaurant, Gu Jieyu, an official with the district wildlife protection station, said yesterday.
Bai Jiaming, a zoo official, said after an autopsy that malnutrition led to the deer's organ failure and a gastric ulcer.
Bai said the deer had been injured for a long time.
Local netizens and police joined in helping rescue the muntjac after it was spotted on Wednesday night.
The injured deer was first sighted on Hutai Road, where it was curled up and appeared to be suffering. It was taken to Liuhang police by two residents. Police posted its photo on Weibo. The next day, wildlife station officials took it away.
The zoo found the male muntjac was severely malnourished. Fearing it might die at any time, the veterinarians immediately operated on its broken leg on Thursday afternoon, but it died that night.
