In-laws sentenced for bigamy
A woman who had an affair with her daughter's father-in-law was sentenced to seven months in prison for bigamy, the Songjiang District People's Court said today.
The woman, named Liu Li, 42, tried to commit suicide at a construction site in Shanghai's suburban Songjing District last December after her bigamous marriage with Qi Wei, her daughter's father-in-law, was exposed. But she was saved.
Qi also got seven months in prison under the court rule.
The duo's dubious relationship started in 2006 when Qi went to visit Liu's home alone and had sex with her after their children were married. In 2007, the two came to Shanghai in the name of job seeking and cohabited in Songjiang for three years without the knowledge of both families.
The affair was uncovered last December when Liu found Qi decided to break up with her and had a big argument with Qi's wife on the construction site where Qi worked.
Liu told prosecutors she threatened to jump off from the seventh floor because Qi refused to give her 100,000 yuan (US$15,677) in compensation.
The pair's incest also led to the divorce of their children's marriage, the court said.
