Inmate stripped of guardianship of child
AN unmarried woman who is serving a one-year jail term for abandoning her newborn daughter was stripped of her guardianship over the child yesterday by Jing’an District People’s Court.
It is the first lawsuit of its kind — against incompetent parents concerning withdrawal of their guardianship — and was filed by the city’s children’s temporary care center, an institution that looks after suspected abandoned babies.
As the baby’s father has disappeared and other relatives are reluctant or considered unsuitable to raise her, she will be placed under care of Shanghai Children’s home while waiting to be adopted, the court said.
The mother, surnamed Gao, 24, delivered the baby, nicknamed Duoduo, on February 19, 2014, in Jiading District’s Anting Hospital. The girl was born sick and transferred to the Shanghai Children’s Hospital.
After treatment, Duoduo was out of danger, but her mother then abandoned her. On May 12, 2016, the hospital sent Duoduo to the city’s children’s temporary care center. Though the center managed to contact Gao, she refused to take Duoduo home, claiming she was unable to raise her.
Last March, the center reported the girl’s abandonment to police. In May, Gao was sentenced to a year in jail.
According to the court, Gao never visited or supported Duo duo during her first three years of life. Duoduo’s father left Gao after she gave birth and declined to look after his daughter. He has not been traced.
