Insurance company pays for tardiness

AN insurance company that delayed in making a vehicle loss assessment after an accident was ordered by Shanghai No. 1 Intermediate People's Court yesterday to pay more than 40,000 yuan (US$6,288).

Jinda Company said it insured a vehicle on a one-year policy in June 2009. At the end of September 2009, a driver, surnamed Li, reported an accident involving the vehicle to the insurance company, which was not named.

However, the insurance company delayed in making a damage evaluation report.

Jinda needed the vehicle, so had repairs done and got an independent assessment.

The insurance company refused to compensate, claiming that the assessment was invalid since the vehicle had been repaired.

The court said the insurance company was responsibility, as it should have made a report within 30 days.
