International canoe race being held in creek

AN international canoe race is being held in Suzhou Creek next Saturday, officials said yesterday.

About 300 competitors from at least 10 countries and regions will take part in the race between Puji Road Bridge and Waibaidu Bridge, Yu Biao, deputy director of the race’s organizing committee, told a press conference.

Traffic on Zhejiang Road N and Gansu Road will be restricted during the race and some sections of the riverside promenades will be temporarily closed.

Over 2,000 police officers and volunteers will be on hand to maintain order and ensure the safety of spectators, Yu said.

The 12-kilometer race will start at Zhejiang Road Bridge, proceeding to Waibaidu Bridge and then to Puji Road Bridge.

Famous racers participating in the event include the Olympic athlete Wu Yanan and 2014 Asian Games champion Zhou Yu.

Amateurs will begin racing at 9am and professionals will start at 3pm.
