Intoxicated crash driver jailed
A motorist who caused a deadly accident while intoxicated has been jailed for 20 months, the Pudong New Area People’s Court said yesterday.
The man, who had been drinking beer, was rear-ended and left the scene of the accident without trying to warn motorists behind him that the road was blocked, resulting in a pileup that caused three deaths.
The man, surnamed Wang, was behind the wheel of a minivan on a highway in Pudong early on August 11, 2015, when he was rear-ended by a container truck. The two drivers got out of their vehicles to check the damage, but neither of them placed an emergency warning triangle on the road or turned on their hazard lights, the court said.
Unaware of the accident on the road ahead, an oil tank truck carrying one passenger crashed into the truck in front of it. The occupants of both trucks were killed and Wang was injured.
Wang immediately called police, but fled the scene because he didn’t want them to know he had been drinking. He later turned himself in.
