Jail time for violent pet lovers
SIX animal rights activists who beat up two people and forced them to eat cat excrement were sentenced to up to six months in jail for creating a disturbance, the Pudong New Area People’s Court said yesterday.
The offenders, members of a WeChat group for animal lovers, beat up the victims because they suspected the duo had mistreated pets. Two of them surrendered themselves to police after the crime, the court said.
According to the court, in July last year, the six accused became enraged when they found some videos online showing cats and dogs being abused and killed.
They then plotted to exact revenge on the two victims, a 27-year-old man and a 25-year-old woman, surnamed Liu and Yi respectively, whom they believed were connected with the videos.
On July 30, one of the perpetrators, surnamed Zeng, lured Liu and Yi to a grove in the Pudong New Area. They were aware they were not the abusers they saw online, but believed them to be accomplices. They beat them, cut their hair and forced them to eat cat excrement.
