Jailed Indonesian woman thanks prison authorities
AN Indonesian woman, serving an 11-year jail term at Shanghai Women’s Prison, read out a letter of thanks to the prison staff for their help and support during her time in jail.
The letter-reading session was organized to mark Wednesday’s International Women’s Day. It was also an attempt by the authorities to throw light on the work done by the prison administration to the public.
The Indonesian woman, who was not identified, said she was nervous when she was jailed as she could not communicate in Chinese but the prison staff encouraged her to learn the language so that she could get along with other inmates. Yesterday, she read out the letter in Chinese.
“All their efforts made me realize it was not bad here,” she said. “I especially appreciate their efforts in looking after me when I was hospitalized for three months in 2011. I felt the warmth of home even though my family was far away in another country.”
The prisoner, who was jailed in 2010, also learned to stitch woollen embroidery and showed a piece of work with a picture of her mother. She said she plans to teach Chinese and needlepoint in Indonesia after her release next year.
About 30 mothers or daughters of inmates were invited by the prison authorities for the activity yesterday and spent some time with their jailed family members. It has become a regular feature since four years ago.
This year, the jail officials encouraged the inmates to write letters to their family members or prison police and read them aloud in front of the other inmates and visitors.
Li Cuiping, the deputy warden, said the letters were a way of expressing feelings, and the activity would encourage prisoners to introspect and pass on the positive energy to others.
Besides the Indonesian woman, four other inmates read out letters.
The letters included one to the students of a school in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. The Shanghai Women’s Prison has donated about 240 books to the school.
