Jailed after drunk driving spree
A drunk driver who damaged three cars and injured a passer-by in a series of crashes has been sentenced to three years and three months for endangering public security.
Shanghai No.1 Intermediate People’s Court said the offenses occurred around 10pm on January 30, 2015, after the driver surnamed Wen dined at a restaurant in Yangpu District. He then insisted he would drive despite being in a state of intoxication.
He hit two cars on Wuzhong Road and sped away. About 2 kilometers further on, he knocked down two passers-by who were hailing a taxi, slightly injuring one of them. Once again, he didn’t stop. Instead, he continued driving and hit another vehicle. He then got out of his car and ran away.
Police found him in a nearby construction site that night. Tests showed an alcohol level in his blood of 2.64 milligrams per milliliter, — the legal limit is 0.8. The economic losses to the three cars reached nearly 430,000 yuan (US$62,265), investigation showed.
According to the court, Wen drove in a drunken state for about 20 kilometers, posing a severe risk to the public. As a result he was convicted of endangering public security.
