Jailed for selling expired milk powder online

FOUR people who sold expired baking milk powder on the Internet have received jail sentences ranging from two to eight years.

Shanghai People’s Procuratorate said the group early last year had spent 1.1 million yuan (US$161,700) buying 80.8 tons of milk powder used for baking, which were imported from New Zealand and which had expired. The milk powder was repackaged and the date changed and was then sold online at a low price. In two months, the group sold expired food worth more than 50,000 yuan.

They were convicted in March of making and selling counterfeit and shoddy food, prosecutors said.

“Crimes of online food and drug business have dramatically increased in recent years. We cracked down on nine of such cases in 2015, but more than 30 in 2016,” said Zhang Zhunmin, deputy director of Shanghai Food and Drug Administration.

Zhang said one major reason behind the increasingly illegal trend was that it was hard to keep an eye on the online market and low prices drove many people to buy unsafe products.

Other major crimes related to the illegal and unlicensed selling of drugs to cure male sexual dysfunction, diet pills and popular non-surgical injections such as Botox. Also, criminals repackaged authentic branded bottles or cans with cheap and counterfeit replacements, Zhang added.

Last year, the administration cracked down on 7,234 cases ignoring food and drug safety and imposed a fine of nearly 164 million yuan. Among them, more than 230 cases were handed over to prosecutors for charges to be laid.

To improve the monitoring of firms with bad records, the administration has put 81 executives from 34 firms on its blacklist, which means they will be strictly supervised and will find it hard to obtain bank loans.
