Japanese restaurant probe over ill diners
A JAPANESE restaurant in Changning District is under investigation after a number of diners became ill after eating there.
The district food safety watchdog said it had received six complaints about Rongxinguan No. 1 since last Saturday.
And more than 10 web users claimed on restaurant review website Dianping.com that after eating at the Xingyi Road eatery they had suffered from vomiting and diarrhea.
Some diners said they became ill after eating Rongxinguan No. 1’s sashimi.
The restaurant offers a seafood buffet for 350 yuan (US$55) per person. It also has another outlet, Rongxinguan No. 2, in the same building.
Rongxinguan No. 1 has closed voluntarily while the investigation is carried out, an official with the food safety authority, surnamed Zhou, told Shanghai Daily.
A report will be released next week.
According to the Shanghai Morning Post, the restaurant said it would reimburse customers for medical expenses and the loss of earnings.
“The sashimi tasted fresh, but that night my husband had stomachache, diarrhea and a fever,” a customer surnamed Lin told the paper.
“At first I thought he might have caught a cold. But I later learned that six friends who had eaten with us at the restaurant had also suffered stomachache and vomiting,” she added.
Lin told the paper four of her friends were diagnosed with acute gastroenteritis.
