Jaywalkers targeted by electronic voice alerts
JAYWALKERS face electronic reprimands at five more downtown crossings where voice alert systems are being installed next month.
This follows positive feedback about two sets of traffic lights with the alerts trialing in Huangpu District since June.
Infrared sensors detect pedestrians stepping onto the road when the lights are red, triggering a audio message stating, “Please stand back and wait for the green light.”
The posts will be installed next to traffic lights at crossings at the junctions of Nanjing Road and Henan Road, and Nanjing Road and Zhongshan Road.
A traffic steward at the Nanjing Road, Zhongshan Road junction said the system can alert “careless jaywalkers” — such as those who step out while looking at their mobile phones.
But for those who flout rules, a reprimand from traffic police or stewards is best, said police.
