Jing’an theft cases up 28%, court reports
THE number of theft cases in January and February in Jing’an rose almost 28 percent from the same period of last year, the district court said.
High-end department stores, especially on Nanjing Road, were the preferred hunting grounds for criminals, the Jing’an District People’s Court said.
While the vast majority of the thefts were committed by men — just 15.8 percent were attributed to women — in cases involving malls, 86 percent of the convicted pickpockets and shoplifters were female, the court said.
Among those convicted was a pickpocket surnamed Zhou who was charged with stealing cellphones from customers in the Reel Department Store on Nanjing Road W. She was given a six-month prison sentence.
In another case, a gang of pregnant women who stole cellphones from the Park Place shopping mall on Nanjing Road were fined for their crimes.
Many of the people convicted of theft were unemployed migrants with a history of crime, the court said.
