Jinshan targets ‘toxic’ firms
JINSHAN District has slapped the maximum permissible 500,000-yuan (US$72,500) fine against a factory for illegal waste water discharge.
The unnamed industrial manufacturer is located in the district’s Zhangyan Town.
The Jinshan District Water Authority said the factory was told to treat the waste water at the sewage treatment system first before releasing it into the city’s sewage network.
But during a surprise late night check, the inspectors found the factory discharging the toxic wastes directly into the public sewage pipes to save costs.
Lab tests showed that the amount of copper from the discharge was 30 times over the acceptable limit.
Jinshan water authority said it had fined companies over 1 million yuan for illegal discharges in 2017 alone. With the city’s environment authority making cleaning rivers its top priority this year, stricter inspections are being undertaken by the enforcement teams to ensure that the sewage network are clean.
Shanghai Environmental Protection Bureau said earlier that there are 631 kilometers of polluted rivers in Shanghai — most of them in suburban districts like Jinshan.
This year, more than 2,000 Jinshan District officials have been named “river chiefs” as part of a national plan to clean and protect waterways and improve water quality.
The environment bureau has set a goal of cleaning all rivers and lakes in Shanghai by the end of the year.
