Jobless gambler lands back in prison
A jobless gambling addict and recidivist thief who allegedly impersonated a construction company boss, stealing steel worth more than 2 million yuan (US$290,000), has been detained by police in Qingpu District.
The man surnamed Kuang was just released from prison in May after he was jailed for six years for stealing forklift trucks. But Kuang took up his old job again in August, police said.
They said he used a fake ID card and masqueraded as a boss of Penghui construction company that rented steel plates for construction. After the steel was transported to his “work sites,” he allegedly sold them quickly to others.
His activities came to light when one of the victims, surnamed Zhang, went to Qingpu police in September, saying he leased steel plates worth 220,000 yuan to Kuang but they just disappeared several days after he went to Kuang’s working site.
Police tracked Kuang down in a Qingpu restaurant in October.
An initial investigation found he had committed more than 30 cases of fraud and theft since August across Shanghai, including Qingpu, Pudong, Songjiang and Minhang, police said.
