Jobless man ‘ran 3.1m yuan scam’
A 30-year-old jobless man has been arrested for allegedly defrauding two people of 3.1 million yuan (US$440,000) by falsely claiming to be a luxury brand manager, Shanghai police said yesterday.
The suspect, surnamed Peng, took 3 million yuan from a woman surnamed Zheng and 100,000 yuan from a man surnamed Huang, promising to sell them authentic Chanel products at a 20 percent discount, police said.
Zheng, a dealer of luxury products, said she got to know Peng via a friend and had bought more than 300,000 yuan worth of products from him before laying a large order that was not honored. Meanwhile, Huang was introduced to Peng by Zheng and had paid 10,000 yuan to him, police said.
Peng allegedly confessed and said he had enticed his victims by selling them bargained-priced products to win their trust.
