Jump in tours to Russia as ruble collapse makes travel cheaper

AS the Russian ruble heads into a free-fall, local travelers are spotting a bargain and signing up for trips to the federation.

Winter is traditionally a slack season for travels to Russia with temperatures in the negative territory, but the staggering fall in the ruble’s value makes it cheaper for tourists.

The number of tourists signing up tour packages to Russia jumped more than 30 percent than normal in the last two to three days, according to the Shanghai Datong Travel Agency.

In the past, more than 70 percent of Chinese tourists to Russia were people over the ages of 50, but more youngsters, keen on shopping, have been signing up in the last few days, online travel operator Ctrip said.

The number of tourists to Russia was up by 30 percent compared to the same period last year, Ctrip said, adding that there were only 5 spots left for a seven-day tour to Russia on February 19, the first day of the Spring Festival.

Tour packages during the Lunar New Year were priced above 10,000 yuan (US$1,612), but people were getting it now for as cheap as 5,999 yuan for trips in January. Another online travel operator ly.com, or Tongcheng, said discounted tour packages priced at 3,999 yuan to 4,999 yuan in January had already sold out.

Most Russian tour packages sold in Shanghai were six to eight-day trips with visits to Moscow and Saint Petersburg. Prices ranged from 5,000 yuan to 8,000 yuan on an average.
