Justice boss admits 1.9m yuan in bribes

THE former deputy director of the Shanghai Justice Bureau yesterday admitted accepting about 1.9 million yuan (US$278,184) in bribes in Shanghai No. 1 Intermediate People's Court.

Prosecutors alleged Shi Qiubo, 57, accepted some 1.87 million yuan from a couple to introduce tour business to the wife, a travel agent, and help the husband gain promotion.

He also accepted 30,000 yuan from a wedding service company manager to offer convenience in notarization, prosecutors said.

Shanghai No. 1 Intermediate People's Court held a full-day hearing yesterday. No verdict has been handed down.

Shi was assigned to be deputy director of the bureau in February 2002, and his job included arranging overseas visits for bureau officials.
