KTV bar told to pay compensation

A KARAOKE bar has been ordered to pay compensation to the family of a man who was killed after he was hit by a car which was being parked by an employee at the valet parking, the Songjiang District People's Court announced yesterday.

Last April, the employee, surnamed Zhang, who didn't even have a driving license, was helping to park the car of a customer who arrived at the KTV bar in Songjiang. While driving in reverse, he crashed into a motorcycle, hitting the victim, who died, and injuring the victim's friend.

The karaoke company was ordered by the court to pay a compensation of 300,000 yuan (US$44,062) to the dead man's family since Zhang was mainly responsible for the accident and because the company, which had hired a man without a driving license as parking assistant, benefited from his service. Zhang is still facing criminal charges.
