‘Kidnapped’ student found in Shaoxing
A UNIVERSITY student who was reported missing on Monday was found by Shanghai police in Zhejiang Province’s Shaoxing city on Wednesday and turned out to be a victim of a telecom scam.
The young woman, surnamed Wang, a third-year student at the Jiading campus of Tongji University, received a call from a stranger on January 3, saying she was involved in a telecom scam. He told her that she and her family members would be arrested if she did not cooperate in the investigation.
He then directed her to open a new account at a bank near the campus and asked her to share the bank details of her other cards.
Wang lost 700,000 yuan (US$106,400) in the scam, police said.
She was forced to borrow money from her parents after telling them she needed to pay “deposit money” for studying abroad, police said.
The scamster then asked Wang to come to Shaoxing on Monday for “further investigation.” While she was on the way, they called her parents and told them that she had been kidnapped and asked for a ransom. The worried parents then approached the police and located Wang.
