Kids’ insect repellents ‘a cheat’
CHILD-FRIENDLY “natural” insect repellents actually contain the same insecticide as standard products — sometimes at higher levels, an investigation has found.
Repellents marketed as “natural” and “non-toxic” are more expensive than conventional anti-mosquito products, some selling for hundreds of yuan.
Sales of the best-selling mosquito repellent for children on the Taobao online shopping platform reached 870 between August 1 and 6.
Yet the Shanghai Morning Post found many contain widely used insect repellent metofluthrin, a pyrethroid chemical with low toxicity.
One children’s product made by Goldeer has metofluthrin content of 0.08 percent — 0.05 percent higher than the brand’s adult product.
“They’re cheats. The children’s mosquito repellent I bought has a higher pyrethroid content, than the one I use at home,” one buyer wrote on Taobao.
“Natural mosquito repellent” is just a marketing slogan, said city quality supervision authorities.
There is no official distinction between children’s and adults’ mosquito repellents in China.
