Killer gets death with two-year reprieve
A MAN who seriously injured his girlfriend and killed her friend after he suspected they were having an affair was sentenced to death with a reprieve of two years yesterday.
Shanghai No. 2 Intermediate People's Court heard that Yu Zhongwei, 41, had lived with his girlfriend Liu in Chongming County for a year. But after a quarrel the previous day, Yu found Liu with a man he didn't know when he returned home on November 30 last year.
Liu later told police the man, surnamed Huang, was a friend she met at an alumni gathering earlier that year. Her brother was Huang's son's tutor.
But Yu felt angry on seeing Huang and, while Liu was fetching his coat, picked a quarrel with him.
Huang was telling Yu that the couple should break up, the court heard. An enraged Yu took a hammer from his tool bag and hit Huang on the head. Liu was also hit on the head when she tried to stop Yu, the court heard.
Huang tried to escape but the door was locked. He then got a knife from the kitchen to fight back, but Yu grabbed it and stabbed him to death. Liu suffered a serious brain injury, the court heard.
