Kiwi fruit plea to help quake victims
AN elderly Shanghai woman who sold her apartment to help survivors of the Sichuan earthquake is calling on people to buy kiwi fruit from the province to aid reconstruction.
After the massive earthquake in May 2008, Shen Cuiying, a 65-year-old retired teacher, founded a trading company, bringing Sichuan-grown kiwi fruit to Shanghai.
The project helps survivors earn a living, though the project sometimes struggles. This year, unseasonably warm weather is making the fruit rot quicker, and 30 tons face going to waste.
Yesterday Shen appealed for help on weibo.com. Many people said they were willing to buy the fruit to make their own contribution.
