Knifeman terrorizes ATM users

POLICE have arrested a man suspected of robbing two women of 8,200 yuan (US$1,249) at knifepoint at an ATM, the Songjiang District People’s Procuratorate said yesterday.

The unemployed suspect, surnamed Shen, said he was desperate for cash after failing to find a job, according to prosecutors.

Songjiang police received a report about a robbery at a bank branch on Gulang Road in Sijing Town on December 24 last year. The victim told police that she went to the ATM to make a deposit at 11pm. As she was leaving, Shen allegedly rushed at her, forced her back into the ATM at knifepoint. He then made her withdraw 6,000 yuan and give it to him.

Another woman reported to the police that she was robbed at the same ATM at 10pm on January 11, having 2,200 yuan taken from her by the suspect.
