Landmark stage for Oil Tank Art Park
AN oil station site has been redeveloped into a park along Huangpu River.
Xuhui District announced at the weekend that construction had been completed on a water platform to allow visitors walk over the river.
The C-shaped platform covers 697 square meters. Some 353-meter-long flood prevention walls have also been built with four floodgates to protect the riverside park.
The oil station site was built by China National Aviation Fuel to store aviation fuel to supply to Hongqiao airport. Now called Oil Tank Art Park, the site is scheduled to open in 2018. “The redevelopment on the site has not only created a public space for residents, but also improves the environment along the river,” a government official said.
Four small tanks and one large one built by the aviation fuel supplier will be renovated to become a reminder of times past at the park. Workers have removed the covers of the huge oil tanks to renovate the inner structures into exhibition halls, plazas, gardens, book stores, education centers and restaurants, a designer of the park said.
The park will cover more than 60,000 square meters with about 10,000 square meters of indoor space.
The Xuhui riverside area was closed to the public for decades as a result of the city’s earliest concrete plant, oil station, shipping dock, railway station and airport all being based there.
The district government began relocating and redeveloping the land in 2010 ahead of the World Expo Shanghai. Numerous factories and warehouses have been turned into art galleries, museums and theaters.
The riverside area is also a part of the city’s 45 kilometers of uninterrupted pedestrian paths along Huangpu River.
