Last slum residents accept offer
HONGKOU District yesterday finished the relocation on the No. 2 section of the Hongzhen Old Street area, the last remaining large slum downtown, after the last two households agreed to accept a relocation offer from the district government.
The section had a total of 696 households with 991 residents. Many residents had at first refused to accept the conditions offered by the government.
Government officials with the district and the Jiaxing Community persuaded all the residents after years of efforts. The relocation work began in December 2010.
The last two households accepted the compensation agreements last week.
This breakthrough came ahead of the deadline for implementing mandatory measures to relocate them, the officials said.
