Latest addition to the waterfront
CONSTRUCTION will be completed this month on a bridge over a main Huangpu River branch in Xuhui.
Chunshengang Bridge is set to become an ideal sightseeing spot to enjoy the scenery on both sides of the Huangpu riverfront and the Chunshengang River, officials said.
The new bridge is also expected to relieve traffic congestion on the busy Longwu Road in south downtown, the district government said.
The 190-meter-long bridge spanning Chunshengang River will open to the public in December.
It will have four vehicle lanes, two footpaths and reserved tram rails for future development, said STEC Shanghai Road and Bridge (Group) Co, the city’s major road and bridge building company.
The river is named after Huang Xie, better known as Chunshen Jun, a nobleman and locally revered hero of the Chu Kingdom in the 3rd century BC to commemorate his decade-long effort to dredge the city’s waterway.
The bridge is featured by its steel structure that is designed to resemble a pair of fish eyes looking into the Huangpu and Chunshengang rivers, said Shen Wei, executive deputy project manager with STEC.
Its simple style avoids obscuring the beautiful scenery along the riverfront along the riverside in Xuhui, also known as the West Bund, Shen added.
The bridge deck with a width of 33.5 meters has been completed and workers are installing handrails along the footpaths.
Chunshengang was once a heavily polluted river.
The Xuhui government has been dredging the mud on the riverbed since 2016 and put many “alga-eating insects” into the river to restore the ecological system.
