Leather shoes found to contain formaldehyde
SEVERAL brands of leather shoe on sale in the city contain excessive levels of formaldehyde, the Shanghai Quality and Technical Supervision Bureau said yesterday.
In tests on 50 batches of shoes, 37 were found to contain the carcinogenic substance, while four had levels classed as excessive, it said.
Women’s shoes made by Shanghai Yingshi Shoes Co under the “Ray” brand and men’s shoes produced by Shanghai Huaihai were among those found to contain excessive amounts of formaldehyde.
Meanwhile, a batch of women’s shoes made by Shanghai Falali Shoes Co and men’s shoes made by Nanjing Meilihua were found to have large amounts of the poisonous compound hexavalent chromium, the bureau said.
Similarly, shoes from Shanghai Dengyun and Fusheng Shoes Co in Fujian Province contained aromatic amines, which are carcinogenic.
All of these substances can lead to inflammation, allergy and cancer, the bureau said.
In separate tests, the bureau found that 47 of 50 batches of leather outerwear contained formaldehyde, while six contained aromatic amines.
