Life term for 4th drug offence

A MAN who had already served three prison terms for narcotics offences was yesterday jailed for life after being found with 3 kilograms of drugs.

The Shanghai No. 2 Intermediate People’s Court heard that the accused, surnamed Zha, was held by police on Changzhong Road in Zhabei District in May.

The 43-year-old was found to have a bag containing 3 kilograms of methamphetamine and other drugs.

In court, Zha claimed that an acquaintance had asked him to look after a bag of clothes and that he did not realize that a stash of drugs had been hidden inside.

However, this version of events was not accepted by the court.

In 2002, Zha was jailed for a year for obtaining and selling drugs and received a four-year sentence for the same offence in 2008.

In September 2013, he was detained for 5 months for selling drugs.

As Zha was again caught with drugs shortly after being released from detention, he should be severely sentenced, the court ruled.

He was also fined 100,000 yuan (US$16,240) by the court.
