Lighthouses planned for Huangpu promenade

TWENTY-ONE lighthouses will be built along the east bank of the Huangpu River to illuminate a path for joggers, walkers and cyclists, according to a plan released yesterday.

The lighthouses, which will be built within three years and house cafes and toilets, will be situated every kilometer along the east side of the river between the Yangpu and Xupu bridges. It is part of a broader project to “create a world-class promenade to improve the image of the city.”

Three lanes for cycling, running and walking will be built along the bank. The path will be surrounded by trees and plants to make it look like a green ribbon running along the river, Zhang Yuxin, deputy governor of the Pudong New Area, told Shanghai Television Station.

Free bicycles will be available and a cable car system will be built, according to the plan, which will be publicized next month.

The first stage of construction, a 5-kilometer stretch of promenade, will be completed by the end of the year, according to the TV station.

The east side of the riverbank is now intermittently blocked by ferry docks, commercial buildings, restaurants and construction sites. Only 45 percent of it is open to the public.

The government plans to open up the whole river bank by the end of next year and complete the major parts of the promenade by 2018.

The area, known as the East Bund, includes the Lujiazui area, the former site of World Expo 2010 and Qiantan, which is being developed into a business district.
