Line 11 announcements kept short
The idea is to keep it short and simple.
And Shanghai Metro aims to do just that.
Line 11 is keeping its announcements on the train simpler after the Metro operators came in for flak over its long-winding announcements.
In the new broadcasts, it announces the name of the coming station, the side of the platform, and line transfer information — all kept within 20 seconds. A woman announcer speaks in Mandarin, followed by a male’s voice in English.
Previous broadcasts on the Metro included, what many thought were unnecessary reminders, like “Please check the time so as not to delay your schedule,” or “passengers holding transportation cards can exchange lines in 30 minutes,” etc.
The announcements would go on for more than half a minute, while commuters missed out on key information.
The shorter variety will gradually be introduced in other lines at a later date.
Display screens on Line 11 will also point out the platform position. The second phase of Line 11 that connects downtown Jiangsu Road Station in Puxi to Pudong New Area’s Luoshan Road Station is likely to be run from this weekend.
Commuters had launched an online campaign in jest to figure out which line had the longest announcement broadcast on the city’s Metro services. The 1 minute and 16 seconds ride from the Hongqiao Railway Station to the Terminal 2 Station of Hongqiao Airport on Line 2 was the clear winner.
Its broadcast is over a minute long. It starts as soon as the train leaves the Hongqiao Railway Station all the way to the next station, meaning you are sitting through it on the entire stretch of the ride.
The Metro operator said the shorter announcements will be used on lines that interlink with Line 11 before introducing it on the other lines.
