Livestock farms make way for Disneyland

LIVESTOCK farms are to be banned in most of the Pudong New Area to help ensure a clean environment for the opening of the Shanghai Disney Resort next spring, local authorities said yesterday.
This will also leave land free for the second and third phases of the resort, officials said.
Nine existing livestock farms in Pudong’s Chuansha Town, where the resort is located, will be closed before the Disneyland park officially opens.
Wei Qiang Pig Farm — which produces more than 1,000 pigs for slaughter a month — and a poultry farm that houses 150,000 chickens will be among the first batch closed, due to their impact on water and air quality in the surrounding environment, said officials.
Wei Qiang, owner of the pig farm that is less than 5 kilometers from the resort and will be closed at the end of year, said he was looking for a new location and the government would provide compensation.
Currently, Pudong farms raise 750,000 pigs. By 2020, this figure will be halved.
