Local police tow hundreds of 鈥榸ombie cars鈥

SHANGHAI traffic police said yesterday that an intensive campaign to remove “zombie cars” from the streets has paid off.
So-called “zombie cars” are vehicles that have been abandoned, or left parked for extended periods of time.
In the Pudong New Area, police said they have removed about 400 such cars this year along major streets. The “zombie cars” towed away by police are now located in a parking lot on Chenhang Highway.
Pudong police said they will now target smaller streets, residential complexes and parking lots in cooperation with subdistricts, residential committees and property managers.
Information on such cars is publicized at residential committees or the property management offices of residential complexes where they were found, and if no one comes forward to claim them after six months, they will be scrapped.
In Jiading District, police have been teaming up with subdistricts and urban management workers to spot and remove “zombie cars.”
About 230 have been removed from streets, market places and residential complexes this year, the district police said.
Police said they give car owners three days to remove the cars themselves, but if they fail to do so, the vehicles will be towed away.
