Locals find 25 cobras in bushes
FIREFIGHTERS in Minhang District were called to a public green space on Caobao Road on Wednesday night after receiving a report that there were snakes in the grass, Shanghai Morning Post reported yesterday.
Seven serpents, all of them cobras, were found on Wednesday night and 18 more were found the next morning.
Apart from two that died at some point, all of the snakes were sent to the Minhang Wildlife Protection Station and then moved to Shanghai Zoo, the report said.
The word “cobra” is a generic name for various venomous snakes. It is the Portuguese word for snake. In China it is listed as a protected species.
A woman who saw the snakes on Caobao Road was quoted by Shanghai Morning Post as saying that she was “scared” by them.
An official with the wildlife protection station told Shanghai Daily that he had no idea where they had come from.
