Long arm of the law snares fugitive who fled 25 years ago

Shanghai immigration police has caught a robbery suspect, who fled abroad 25 years ago and has gained foreign citizenship, at Pudong airport, the exit-entry administration said yesterday.

The suspect, surnamed Xie, who now has Slovakia nationality, was caught by police when he flew back with his wife on Tuesday for a family reunion for the Spring Festival that falls on Friday.

Xie has been handed over to police in Yiwu City in east China’s Zhejiang Province, local police said.

He allegedly robbed a victim of over 9,000 yuan (US$1,488) with another suspect surnamed Zeng at the Yiwu Small Commodity Market on the midnight of October 1, 1989, Zhejiang police said.

Xie fled to Slovakia by ship and became a citizen in 2004.

On Tuesday, Xie arrived on Turkish Airlines flight TK026 from Istanbul and looked quite anxious in the immigration queue at the airport, an official with the administration said.

“Xie behaved quite impatiently when he was answering the questions from police and kept saying he was on urgent schedule,” the official said.

When asked for his Chinese name, Xie used the name of his son.

But it didn’t convince local police and later they discovered he was wanted by police in Yiwu.

“Xie argued he was not the suspect at the beginning and then claimed he had forgotten what happened 25 years ago,” a police officer surnamed Zhang said.
