Long sentence for jealous man who ran amok
A man who served 20 years in jail before being released two years ago is back behind bars for trying to burning his girlfriend alive and stabbing two bystanders.
The man surnamed Li, 50, had suspected his girlfriend was cheating on him and he vented his anger on her and two other women, according to the Jing’an District People’s Court.
The court said Li had used extreme violence, so he was convicted of attempted murder. As he had committed his latest crimes within five years of being freed, his punishment was reflected in his sentence, and he was jailed for 13 years.
Li was originally jailed for 20 years on charges of affray, extortion, drug offenses and illegal firearms trading. After he was released in March 2015, he stayed in a hotel in Jing’an, and there met a hotel attendant surnamed Meng who became his girlfriend, the court said.
Last September 13, Li accused Meng and a male friend of having an improper relationship. He poured petrol on the floor and set fire to his room with Meng and her friend inside it.
Both victims managed to escape and Li dashed out of his room to search for Meng. In the corridor, he stabbed and injured a hotel attendant surnamed Zhang after demanding to know where Meng had gone.
Li then attacked another hotel attendant surnamed Xu. He hacked at her neck until she was motionless. At which point, police rushed to the scene and subdued Li.
Xu later recovered from her ordeal, the court said.
