Longer trains on line extension
SIX-CARRIAGE trains will run on the southern extension of Metro Line 5 to help cope with the large numbers of passengers expected.
And signaling systems will be upgraded to reduce intervals between trains, Metro operator Shanghai Shentong Group said yesterday.
Currently, trains running on Line 5 have four carriages.
Work is set to begin next year, from Dongchuan Road Station on the present Line 5 in Minhang District to Nanqiao New City Station in Fengxian District.
The new line will be more than 19 kilometers long with nine stops.
Officials said six-carriage trains are needed as the extension will bring a huge influx of passengers from large residential communities.
These include Nanqiao New City — set to have a population of up to 1 million by 2020 — Minhang New City, Xidu Town, Xiaotang Community and Shanghai Fengpu Industrial Park.
