Love cheat arrested in US$46,000 online con
A WOMAN has been arrested for fraud after cheating a male workmate out of hundreds of thousands of yuan by masquerading online as potential girlfriends, the Huangpu District People’s Procuratorate said yesterday.
The fraud began when the defendant, surnamed Cai, offered to arrange a date for the man named Su who had recently become separated from his wife, prosecutors said.
Cai was aware that Su was attracted on a friend of hers, so gave him what she claimed was the woman’s WeChat address.
However, the account was run by Cai, who used it to flirt with Su and separate him from his cash.
Despite never meeting, in the weeks that followed Su sent his new “girlfriend” more than 300,000 yuan (US$46,300) in cash and gifts, prosecutors said.
When that “relationship” ended — for reasons not given by the procuratorate — Cai offered to introduce Su to another “friend” and then repeated the scam, it said.
Su soon became smitten with his latest imaginary lover and the couple discussed wedding plans.
It was only after Cai asked Su to send her 4 million yuan to cover for his share of the cost of a matrimonial home that the swindle came to light.
When Su told his parents that he was planning to sell his apartment to raise the sum requested they became suspicious and contacted the police.
