Lovelorn man wins 4m yuan payout

A LOCAL matchmaking company has been ordered by an appeal court to repay a dissatisfied customer 4 million yuan (US$645,000) after failing to find him a suitable partner.

The Shanghai No. 1 Intermediate People’s Court ruled that the unnamed agency failed to fulfill a contract signed in December 2009 with the plaintiff, a fortysomething man surnamed Zhang.

Despite claiming to have searched for mates across the country, the firm arranged only eight dates for Zhang, who in turn handed over 7 million yuan in fees.

He eventually became disgruntled and asked for his money back. When the agency refused, he filed a lawsuit last year.

The first court to hear the case ruled in Zhang’s favor and ordered the agency to repay 1.3 million yuan.

Zhang, however, was not satisfied with the amount and filed an appeal with the Shanghai No. 1 Intermediate People’s Court, which yesterday ruled in his favor and increased the payment to 4 million yuan.
