Lovers go to jail over theft of codes

TWO lovers were each sentenced to three years in prison yesterday for embezzling coupon codes used to get virtual items for online games and selling them for more than 470,000 yuan (US$71,756).
Xuhui District People's Court judges ruled the lovers had distinct, yet equal roles in the embezzlement.
Du Xiaohui, 26, from Shandong Province, was in charge of database management at Lexian Software Development (Shanghai) Co Ltd.
Lexian was entrusted to provide operational support services to two online games in July 2008. Du managed the database of the two games.
He took advantage of his position to copy some coupon codes that could be used to exchange virtual items. He gave the codes to his girlfriend, Chen Yang, to play the games in September 2009.
Chen sold the codes to an online game trading Website and vendors at Taobao.com.
