鈥楲ump鈥 found in local woman's spleen was actually a fetus
SURGEONS at Renji Hospital yesterday removed a woman’s spleen after discovering that a mysterious lump inside it was actually a three-month old fetus.
The 25-year-old had visited her local hospital last month after suspecting she was pregnant. Medics there, however, were unable to confirm her suspicions as the ultrasound tests they carried out showed no signs of a baby.
Only after getting a second opinion at Renji Hospital, and undergoing a CT scan, were doctors able to get to the truth of the matter.
“The scan showed a lump of about 6 centimeters in diameter, and inside that was the fetus,” surgeon Liu Wei told Shanghai Daily yesterday.
In the vast majority of ectopic pregnancies, instead of developing inside the uterus, the embryo grows in the fallopian tube. To have one attach itself to the spleen is extremely rare, Liu said.
“This is the first pregnancy in a spleen I have ever seen,” he said.
The patient will remain under observation, but is recovering well, Liu said.
“She is getting better and doesn’t have a fever. She should be able to get out of bed for a little while tomorrow,” he said.
The removal of the spleen won’t have any major health implications for the future, he said.
