‘Lust, Caution’ star victim of 210,000 yuan scam on set

“Lust, Caution” star Tang Wei fell victim to a 210,000 yuan (US$35,000) fraud while filming in the city, after being persuaded over the phone to wire money, police said yesterday.

Tang, who first found fame in the 2007 Ang Lee movie, was filming in Chedun film town in Songjiang District on Saturday afternoon when she received a phone call and went to a bank and wired 210,000 yuan.

According to Songjiang police, they received a call from 34-year-old Tang at 4pm on Saturday to report the fraud. Officers said she had been tricked into paying the sum.

A person claiming to be an employee at the branch of the Bank of Communications posted on Sina Weibo microblog yesterday that he saw Tang Wei at counter service at the bank.

Tang’s agent confirmed  yesterday that fraud had taken place, but wouldn’t reveal details. Investigation are ongoing, said police.

The case has been widely discussed online, with many people expressing surprise that a young movie star had been duped.

Elderly people are more usually perceived as victims of such scams, as they are considered being too trusting and unfamiliar with technology.
