Luxury car mirror thief held
A 27-YEAR-OLD man who allegedly stole side-view mirrors from luxury cars and then used them to extort money from the owners has been arrested for extortion, prosecutors in Xuhui District said yesterday.
The amount of money involved in the case reached more than 200,000 yuan (US$29,922), prosecutors said.
One of the 51 victims, a person surnamed Huang, found two mirrors stolen from his car in a parking lot in Xuhui District in April. A message with a cell phone number was posted on his car window. Huang called the number and was told if he wanted to get the mirrors back, he would have to transfer 1,400 yuan to a bank account.
After transferring the money, the man told Huang that the mirrors were kept at a nearby bus stop.
Huang recovered the mirrors and then reported it to police.
