Major cities on focus in exhibit on urban planning

THE city’s urban planning authority yesterday has unveiled an exhibition along the Huangpu River about the city and its future outlook along with other successful urban planning cases from cities around the world.

The “Urban Evolution” exhibition will run through the end of the year at the Art West Bund exhibition center on Longteng Avenue in Xuhui District. It will display pictures, screen videos and interviews with residents and experts on the evolution of Shanghai and its future development.

Some 40 urban planning cases of New York, Barcelona, Hamburg and Chengdu and Beijing in China will also be displayed through photographs, wooden architectural models and videos.

The exhibition tries to answer how to balance ecological environment with urban development, said Mohsen Mostafavi, one of the chief organizers of the exhibition. He said modern urbanization can bring problems of pollution and shortage of energy, which should be taken into account during urban planning.

One of the highlights of the exhibition is a collection of “typical smells” from over 500 iconic places across the city such as the Lujiazui and Xintiandi.

“It is the first time that a peculiar kind of smell has been stored in bottles,” said Wu Jiang, a professor with Tongji University who is an organizer.

The closing section of the exhibition is named Shanghai 2040. Several urban planning experts and officials will talk about the city’s future in a video interview. Visitors can give advises that will be passed on to the top planning body and the city government.
