Major new tour bus hub to serve Disney visitors
HUANGPU District government will open the city’s biggest traffic hub for tourist buses at Shiliupu Wharf in the Bund to serve the large number of passengers visiting the Shanghai Disney Resort, officials said yesterday.
The Shanghai comprehensive travel service center on 520 Zhongshan Road E., which will begin operating in June, will become a major gathering point for tourist buses from outside the city, said district official Xia Feng.
The newly completed center covers over 37,000 square meters and has three underground levels with 800 parking spaces for small vehicles and 100 for buses, Xia said.
“Most of the tourist buses are being parked at People’s Square or in front of the Peace Hotel on Nanjing Road E., which is likely to cause traffic congestion there. They will be directed to park at the new center after its opening,” Xia told a press conference.
To serve the Disney visitors, the district government will run a shuttle bus route between the center and the Disney resort from June 16 when the theme park will officially open. The buses will depart hourly or every 30 minutes depending on demand and a one-way ticket will cost 25 yuan (US$3.8). The journey takes about 45 minutes.
To relieve traffic congestion, local motorists are encouraged to drive to the center, park their vehicles and then transfer to the shuttle bus to get to the resort, Xia added.
More long-distance bus routes will be launched at the center to take tourists to neighboring cities such as Hangzhou and Nanjing.
Some 270 million tourists visited Shanghai from both other parts of China and abroad last year, according to Liu Yijing, director of the district tourism administration.
The administration will launch three new city sightseeing bus routes in June to take tourists to Nanjing Road, the Bund and the Xintiandi area. The ticket price will be about 30 yuan and English-speaking tour guides will be available.
To attract more Disney visitors to the district, the administration has also asked local travel agencies to offer packages that include the attractions in both Disneyland and Huangpu.
A cultural tour package, for instance, costs 1,299 yuan and includes a ticket to the Mandarin production of the Broadway musical “The Lion King,” which opens at the Shanghai Disney Resort on June 16 as well as tours to Yuyuan Garden and a Peking Opera performance.
