Malaysian on trial for slapping colleague
A MALAYSIAN man went on trial yesterday for allegedly breaking the ear drum of a female colleague by repeatedly slapping her after a business talk with a client.
Chua Cher How, 35, told the Shanghai No. 2 Intermediate People's Court that he assaulted his subordinate, surnamed Lu, because she leaked his plan of job-hopping to the client and offered commission to the client without his permission.
Lu said in court that Chua had acted in anger because she had spurned his advances on learning that he was married and had a daughter.
The court didn't hand down any verdict because Lu applied for appraisal of her disability and mental condition.
On the afternoon of November 10, 2010, Lu accompanied Chua, her superior at a foreign furniture company, to visit a South Korean designer to discuss a cooperation program.
The three went to a bar, where they had some drinks. After Lu paid the bill, Chua suddenly splashed his beer on her and slapped her across the face three times. Though waitresses in the bar pulled him away, he rushed over to slap her again, according to testimony of two waitresses.
The attack shattered the ear drum of Lu's left ear. She has lost her hearing in the left ear. What's more, she has been seriously depressed since, her lawyer Ma Yongjian said.
Chua told the court he had drunk too much beer. Plus, the South Korean designer told him that Lu had talked about Chua's job-hopping plan in private and she promised commissions if the designer agreed to cooperate.
