Male prostitution ringleader sentenced by Pudong court
A MAN was sentenced to five years in prison yesterday for running a male prostitution ring and six male prostitutes were punished separately, the Pudong New Area People's Court said today.
The convict surnamed Wang ran the Pudong Mingdiao Club and a related website. His customers included men from South Korea, Japan, Europe and North America.
The 28-year-old man from Anhui Province had been a male prostitute himself and took over the website from his former boss who was afraid of a crackdown during last year's World Expo in Shanghai.
Wang recruited male prostitutes known as "technicians" in the trade and published their pictures on the website. He altered their pictures to make them look more attractive, placing their heads on muscular bodies found online, the court heard.
Customers could contact Wang through QQ, a popular online chat tool, and a phone number he left on the site. Mingdiao Club could receive on average two customers a day before it was closed last October.
Wang rented two apartments and charged the technicians a management fee. They were banned from receiving customers in private. Clients were charged between 400 yuan (US$61) and 500 yuan a time, of which Wang would receive 150 yuan to 180 yuan.
Following a tip-off, police raided the apartments on October 28, 2010 and detained two prostitutes. Shen Min, the judge handling the case, said although prostitution stipulated in China's Criminal Law mainly concerns females, male prostitutes should also be included.
